Book Review: The Door-To-Door Bookstore by Carsten Henn

It’s a book about books that are delivered to customer’s doorstep by a 70-year-old man, Carl Kollhoff.  Carl is a bibliophile himself who knows what his customer’s need. Books fill his life and in a way complete him. He enjoys delivering books and while doing so has kept a different alias for all of his clients. He has a world of his own in his mind and this makes the plot all the more interesting. His job makes it easy for readers who can’t leave their homes. In this process Carl feels a purpose of helping people by delivering books from his ill friend Gustav’s bookstore where he works. The characters in the novel strike a chord with Carl through the books delivered to them by him. As days pass he establishes a very impressive bond with each one of them. A 9-year-old girl Schascha opts to accompany Carl for his deliveries. The little girl is far too wise for her age and knows the needs of peoples lives. By being around Carl she unknowingly creates a very special place in his heart. She also plays a very important part in bringing Carl’s all clients together and helps improve their lives by just being herself.

It’s a beautiful book written by the German author Carsten Henn which is set in southern Germany. This novel has been translated into English by Melody Shaw. The story has drama, friendship, humor, warmth, suspense, courage, domestic violence, fear, humanity, pure intentions, remorse, intrigue, absence and joy. The power of books unites the characters of the novel in a very charismatic way. The story uplifts on many occasions and is emotional to some extent. It also throws light on possibilities and changing one’s destiny by choosing to do the right thing. It’s a charming book that brings effortless smiles.
