Short Story: Separate Lives

Ivy Ahuja believes in Abhinav more than he believes in himself. This gentleman that she has loved for years is aging gracefully. Their marriage is a beautiful one. She knows that he will be made the director of the firm in the coming months. A close friend of hers is the wife of one of the board of directors and it is difficult to keep this juicy news from the love of her life. The revenue had been good this year and the board feels all is happening because of her competent husband. Abhinav belongs to the breed of men who think work is worship and wife is a one time investment for rich dividends. The key to a happy conjugal life is a full on involvement in all aspects of companionship, intimacy and bonding.
Texting, mailing and calls happen during work hours. When their two married children are not visiting them they go on dates and trips. Electronic gadgets are switched off and quality time is the buzzword for the smitten lovebirds. Ivy has a boutique and her assistants take charge in her absence mostly. After working for 10 years in a corporate setup she had quit and preferred being a mother first and then an entrepreneur. She had saved enough to realise this dream. The house which was given to her by her parents was converted into a commercial hub. She struggled initially but then after a couple of years the business had picked up and Abhinav too was very supportive.
Nikhil and Amrita opted for arranged marriages and this was respected as well as appreciated. Unlike them, their children were not rebellious and wanted their parents to choose their life partners. Abhinav and Ivy had met in college and their courtship lasted five years. Before their parents could find out they eloped and married. The first three years there were taunts, boycotts and name calling but as soon as Nikhil was born things had begun to change for the better. The grandparents just couldn’t stay away from the little one. Years of resentment died a natural death and blessings filled their lives.
The automobile industry was growing and multinational companies were making their mark. Work was double, The presence of grandparents helped a great deal. Ivy was able to juggle with work as well as motherhood but something was still amiss. The inner dream to do something of her own could only materialise when Amrita finished her boards. Producing two kids in a gap of three years is not easy and demands a lot of round the clock care, devotion and attention. Having parents closeby makes it all less stressful. The lovebirds were neighbours so after a little marriage related incident in between eventually Nikhil by being born saved the family from going mad. They never needed househelp.
Kids along with love add so much to life. Responsibility, care, sacrifices, undivided attention and adjustments defined the Ahujas in their late 20’s. In their mid thirties love was there but expressing had taken a backseat. Privacy was hardly there but it was a happy home. The transition from a 24*7 working mother to an entrepreneur too wasn’t easy. Fights and arguments were common but resolved after a couple of days of throwing attitude and silent treatment. End of the day, the happiness of their kids always mattered and battles were abandoned for the overall peace of the house.
Ivy had an arresting face with flawless skin. She loves wearing sarees and does not look like a woman in her late 40’s. Greyish hair adds to the charm of having a heavy bottom. Doe-eyed Mrs. Ahuja is graceful in every way and Abhinav seduces her whenever he can. The health of their parents is deteriorating but there is still hope for so much. A lanky Abhinav with a receding hairline gives him a very debonair look. Now nurses and servants fill the house and their villa has a separate quarter for 24*7 assistance. Abhinav and Ivy are best friends and are very close. It’s only between them that it has transformed into an open marriage after Amrita’s wedding. From the very beginning they never checked each other’s phones. Their friend’s lives were private in spite of the couple’s goals. There was no breach of trust and friendships were respected. Protection became necessary whenever they got intimate with others physically. They never needed it for themselves till date. There is honesty, separate bedrooms when the other person needs space or good sleep. This understanding of years is the backbone of their solid marriage in spite of separate lives they are living that never intermingle even in 2025.
