Book Review: A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
Under the leadership of Indira Gandhi India had declared a State of Emergency in 1975. Mr. Mistry, an Indian-born Canadian writer has etched a story around it that highlights corrupt and heartless society. The story talks about a widow, DIna, who has a never say die attitude, two tailors Ishwar and Om who chose city life over their native village full of casteism and a student Maneck who misses his hometown full of hills. The four protagonists are victims of harsh times that push them to their limits. It has torture, death, fear, laughter, heartbreak, hope, despair, dark spots, brief spells of happiness, love, political unrest, social injustice and imbalance.
The hiccups of struggling lives have been penned beautifully. Far from being predictable the story holds a sense of intrigue with amazing twists to the plot overall. It reminds the reader about the importance of family and friendship. Untouchability and biased approaches have been mixed with pain and sarcasm. A fine balance is about strangers who come together and create a beautiful bond. The ill effects of the Emergency deeply affect the main characters of this masterpiece. Their tenacity and resolve help them get through tough times. In their struggle to have a better life a lot is at stake yet they manage to meet the pressing needs mostly. The narration acts as a guide for extreme circumstances.
Rohinton Mistry throws light on the powerless poor of India and their heroism of dealing with any situation that comes their way. It’s all about the daily struggle for survival that may leave one heavy. This book is not for the weak hearted though it leaves a lasting imprint as it inches towards its end. It has all the ingredients to remain in our minds for a long period of time. The characters have shades of grey, positivity and internal demons that surface from time to time. All in all its an absorbing read that pinches with subtle messages.
