Book Review: Char Dham: Four Sacred Shrines, One Transformative Journey by Shweta Mathur Lall

Spirituality is the backbone of this non-fiction book. The author extensively writes about the four sacred temples of Hinduism situated in different states of India; The Jagannath Temple, Ramanathaswamy Temple, Dwarkadhish Temple and Badrinath Temple. Their architecture, locations, myths, truths, beliefs, rituals, facts, ceremonies and practices engage one on many levels. It educates the reader with interesting stories about their inception and culture. At the same time it is a guide for devotees on how, when and why to travel to these Godly places for pilgrimage. A lot of research has been done on the significance and importance of these pious temples. Devotion, selfless love, transformation of self, reflection, cleansing one’s sins and self-discovery define this neutral and informative book. It does not preach at all.
Shweta Mathur Lall is a dentist by profession in New Delhi, India and has written many short stories and poems in the past.
