Book Review: The Sellout by Paul Beatty

The narrator of the novel is summoned by the Supreme Court for violation of civil rights. Me and Bonbon used as aliases for the protagonist of the book is a Black American who lives in Dickens on the outskirts of Los Angeles but the place has been wiped out from the map because the majority of Black people live there. This disturbs Bonbon and he wants to bring it back so as to save himself from this identity crisis. Hominy Jenkins is a very famous resident of Dickens who fears his popularity will decline so he asks Me to keep him as a slave and the offer is accepted. These two reintroduce slavery and segregation to draw attention to their efforts and actions. Racial discrimination is the highlight of this hilarious witty entertaining yet painful read.

The Sellout also portrays the relationship the narrator shares with his father who is killed by the police in a shootout. It has sarcasm, fearless outrage, honest reflection of racial America, romance, intelligence, and wit. Paul Beatty is the first American to win 2016’s Man Booker Prize.
